Surprise is located approximately 20 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix. An unusual name at the best of times, Surprise was christened as such by Flora Statler who, in 1938, had commented ironically that she “would be SURPRISED if the town ever amounted to much!” As the 7th fastest growing city in Arizona, Surprise is surrounded by beautiful mountains, lakes, and the picturesque Sonoran Desert. Surprise draws many first-time home buyers with it family-friendly parks, many restaurants, pools, libraries, shopping, IMAX Digiplex, and Aquatic Center.
Tens of thousands of retirees moved to Surprise in the 1990s and early 2000s to live in Sun City Grand, an age-restricted, resort-like community whose 9,800 homes were built by Del E Webb Company. It hosts a bountiful lineup of amenities, social activities, and four championship golf courses designed by PGA Hall-of-Famer Billy Casper and renowned golf course architect Greg Hash. Multiple clubhouses and a wide variety of outdoor recreations are offered throughout Sun City Grand.
Arizona Traditions offers a small-community feel with big community amenities. With only 1,768 homes, D.R. Horton designed this community to meet the requests of retirees who were looking for an active lifestyle in a more intimate setting. Residents here thoroughly enjoy the many community amenities sure to keep them socially and physically active.
Sun Village is an established, gated 55+ community also located in Surprise. Building began here in the mid 1980’s with 1,385 low maintenance homes at completion in 1995. There are over30 clubs and interest groups and a full-time Activities Director is available to help coordinate the recreational activities and social clubs. Golf enthusiasts are fond of the Sun Village Golf Course, a public walking golf course.
