Scottsdale, the 7th largest city in Arizona, is located approximately 11 miles east of downtown Phoenix. It was founded in 1894 by Winfield Scott, a retired U.S. Army chaplain, who visited the region, was impressed by its potential for agriculture, and purchased 640 acres for $3.50.
Old Town Scottsdale is a popular attraction with many streets, old-fashion stores, boutiques, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, museums, studios, and art galleries. It contains the major nightlife for the area and is a major art center of metropolitan Phoenix. Scottsdale houses the high-end Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall, one of the twenty largest malls in the United States. Scottsdale is commonly defined by its high quality of life and was once awarded “The Most Livable City” award from the US Conference of Mayors.
The Mayo Clinic has one of its three major branches in Scottsdale. This and its resulting effects have made Scottsdale an attractive destination for medical care.
Scottsdale is continually ranked as one of the premier golf and resort destinations in the world. It is home to the annual Waste Management Phoenix Open Golf Tournament held at the Tournament Players Club. Since 1971, Scottsdale has also been home to the ever so popular Barrett-Jackson Auto Show which is held annually.
