Wittmann is located approximately 35 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix. In 1920, William Griffin founded this town and named it Nadaburg – “Nada” in Spanish means nothing and “burg” in German means town. In 1930, the citizens of this town changed its name to Wittmann after Joseph Wittmann who promised to build a damn on the Hassayampa River which would bring water to irrigate their fields. Wittmann never kept his promise and the citizens of the town sued him.
Wittmann is a desirable area for horse owners as the land is flat and easy to build large horse facilities. It is also a great place for families as the commute to most amenities is short and makes rural living a possibility for many. Residents of Wittmann say they love “the small-town feel.”
